You've
all seen them - those incredibly ugly home pages built by the misguided
individuals who think that the way to build a site is to find a patterned
background, throw on some text in a funky font (which probably won't show
up in a visitor's browser), use sick-making colours for the text, add too
many overlarge graphics (thereby making load times so slow that most
visitors leave in frustration before viewing the page), give every page a
different "theme", make navigating the site like finding your way
through a maze and then proudly
proclaim to all their friends "Come visit my new web site!"
(One shudders to imagine these people's home decor. Portraits of
Elvis on velvet? Floral drapes with checked sofa and paisley
carpet? The permutations of tastelessness are too dreadful to
imagine...)
Building a beautiful site need not take a lot of
time. If you make use of the page sets so readily available on the
web all the really hard work
(and believe me, producing these sets has been the result of many hours of
work by their designers) has been done for you. These pages - once the text was written and
the links were assembled - were put together using Microsoft Front Page
(but any good HTML editor will do) in about two hours from start to
upload!
The page sets I
use will change six weeks, but thanks to the magic of cascading style
sheets a complete change of page set can be done in under an hour.
So, if you would like to learn a bit about how to make your site more beautiful
and functional (and also much easier to maintain) click on the links above
or below and read on..
Of course, if you have a tacky/ugly site but like it the way it is then you
are one of those people who proves that for many, taste is only an oral
perception, and you should just close this window and go away and not waste your time here - you
are beyond redemption !
